Tinsukia is the district headquarter town of Tinsukia district in the state of Assam. The population of town is 85563 in 2001 where the slum population is 36692. 42.88% of the slum population lives in the slum area. The concentration urban poor is higher  with 42.88% of the total population residing in slums. Tinsukia is the main commercial center of the region. It is very rich in tea (highest tea producing district of Assam), oil, forest and mineral products. The economic structure  of Tinsukia town is based upon tertiary sector which includes trade and commerce and transportation as well as government jobs. Activities related to trade and commerce and transportation alone comprise of 26.2% of the total employment of the town.
