Diphu, the headquarter town of Karbi Anglong District, Which was formally known as the Mikir Hills, is the first hill town of the Assam after the formation of Meghalaya State. The economic status of Diphu town is based upon tertiary sector which includes trade, commerce, transportation as well as government jobs. Activities related to trade commerce and transportation alone comprise of 38.07% of the total employment of the town. Diphu face the Limitation of Habitable area and have comparatively under developed transport and communication system coupled with the lack of resource development. The population of town as per census 2001 is 52310.26.87% of the population live in the slum area. The geographic condition of the town is such that mostly all the slum area is developed in scattered form because of the hill town and non- availability of the plain land area

The slum scenario of the Diphu is really challenging where 26.87% of the population live in the slum area. The existing slum is divided into 59 nos in ten numbers of wards. The slum analysis carried out by the SPRS team highlights the comprehensive profile of the town as:

After the study and profile preparation, we submitted a proposal l for the finance resource management to the DIPHU town committee for the establishment of 320 new dwelling units and the infrastructure facility for the same.
